Passport Office
When applying for a passport, one must visit the Passport Office in person except for minors under the age of 6 years.
Passport photos are only required for minors under the age of fourteen and for Maltese citizens residing abroad who do not hold a Maltese ID card.

To collect the passport, adults must present own valid and original ID card while for the minors’ passports, the parent collecting the passport must present own original ID card or valid passport.
Minors from the age of 12 years must also be present for the collection accompanied by one of the parents.
One can apply at one of Malta’s Embassies, High Commissions and General Consulates authorized to issue passports.
It is recommended that you contact them directly to have an appointment scheduled before going in person to have the biometrics captured.

If the passport is expired, first one must seek assistance from an EU mission to have a one-way travel document issued. With this document one must travel to the nearest Maltese mission or Malta to apply for a new passport.

Should a passport be lost, stolen, or destroyed while still valid, the holder is required to submit a police report with such claims.
When a passport is lost, stolen or destroyed, Section 7 on Form A must be filled in, signed, and stamped by a recommender even if the lost passport is expired.
If the passport was still valid, the applicant would need to take an oath or give a sworn declaration at the Passport Office. An extra fee of €15 applies.
The recommender must be a Maltese, EU, or Commonwealth national residing in Malta, holding a university degree, and must have known the applicant for at least two (2) years. The recommender must use a rubber stamp as proof of their profession. In the absence of a stamp, the warrant number or academic credentials must be provided.
All signatures on Application Form A must be original wet signatures. Electronic or scanned signatures are not accepted under any circumstances, including those of the recommender.
Both parents must be present and sign in front of the recommender using wet signatures.

The parent residing abroad must visit one of the Maltese Missions abroad to have a consent form filled in by an authorised MFET official.
The parent must go in person presenting the original and valid passport or ID card. The MFET official will fill in the consent form acting as a witness. The official coat of arms must also be used. The consent form together with an endorsed true copy of the passport including official coat of arms stamp, must be forwarded to our office through the official MFET email account.
Consent form from personal email accounts will not be acknowledged by Passport Office.

- The parent visits our office on his/her own presenting original and valid ID card. A consent form will be filled in witnessed by an official from Passport Office. A true copy of the ID card is kept with the consent form
When the other parent submits the Form A, the consent form will be attached to the applications form and the passport can be processed.
- The parent who needs the passport must file a court application in the Maltese Courts asking for the Courts authorisation to have a Maltese passport issued and collected without the other parent’s consent. Once the court decree is issued, the parent can submit the passport application presenting the original court decrees.
The cancelled passport booklet will be returned to the relative or sent for destruction depending on the relative’s request.
Once you access the portal, you choose the service required, your preferred date and time. Once appointment is confirmed, an email will be received.

We strongly recommend that a booking is made before attending to our office for a more efficient service.
On the other hand, if an applicant is over the age of twelve (12) years and is unable to call in person to apply for his/her passport and have his/her fingerprints captured due to a temporary or permanent medical reason, sickness or because of old age, he/she will be issued with a passport which is valid for one (1) year or less. In such circumstances, a medical certificate must be submitted to sustain the applicant’s claim of infirmity.
In the unlikely event that the fingerprint capturing station fails to capture the applicant’s fingerprint because of a technical problem (especially in urgent matters and in the case of outside office hours service), the Passport Office will issue a passport without the encoded fingerprints, which will be valid for one (1) year or less.
If the fingerprints captured on collection does not match that stored on the e-passport’s chip, the travel document will not be released, and the matter will be investigated by the Passport Officer in charge.
Yes, a police officer is usually available on site. However, we recommend bringing the police report with you.
