Public Registry
Those couples who are getting married in Malta should contact the Public Registry in Malta. Couples getting married in Gozo should apply for their marriage banns at the Marriage Registry in Victoria, Gozo.
The Public Registry requires original documents for registration purposes. Documents presented to the Public Registry, are retained indefinitely in its archives. Public documents that are not in the English language must be translated into Maltese or English. In cases where one or several fields are in a language other than the English or Maltese language, a translation of these fields is necessary for processing the document. Couples are requested to book an appointment with a Marriage Registry Officer by clicking on the following link https://pubregbooking.identita.gov.mt or by sending an email to pubreg.marriage.identita@gov.mt at least three (3) months before their marriage date. The email must contain a telephone number where the couple may be contacted.
A Marriage Registry Section officer will make contact and set an appointment for the couple.
Couples must prepare the following information before the appointment date:
- The church where the marriage will be held;
- The date of marriage;
- The name and surname of the priest who will celebrate the marriage ceremony;
- The surname/s of the spouses after marriage and the family name being adopted.
The couple should also provide:
- Birth certificates (if the applicants’ birth is not registered with the Malta Public Registry) apostilled or legalised as necessary (unless these are coming from the European Union);
- Identification documents and copies thereof;
- A photocopy of the identification documents of the witnesses;
- Other documents as required.
After the celebration of the nuptial mass, the couple, together with the witnesses and the wedding officiant who administers consent, must sign the Marriage Act. This certificate must be returned to the Public Registry by the Parish Priest for registration.
Maltese nationals planning on getting married to a foreigner or a person who has lived abroad for a period of time will be requested to present additional documentation in support of their application. The guidance of a Marriage Registry officer is imperative in this respect.
Marriages can take place on board passenger ships registered in Malta. In such cases couples are advised to contact the Marriage Registry Section for guidance.
Couples must be asked to contact the Marriage Registry Section at least three (3) months prior to their marriage date for the publication of banns.
The Marriage Registrar should be notified of the following:
- The place where the marriage is to be held;
- The date of the marriage;
- The surname/s of the spouses after marriage and the family name being adopted.
The couple should provide:
- Birth certificates (in case of applicants whose birth is not registered at the Malta Public Registry) apostilled or legalised as necessary (unless these are coming from the European Union);
- Identification documents and copies thereof;
- A photocopy of the identification documents of the witnesses;
- Other documents as required.
The forms required are:
- Request for the publication of banns for matrimony for the purposes of Article 7(4) of the Marriage Act; &
- Declaration under Article 7(5) of the Marriage Act.

The location of the Civil Union must be established first. Couples getting married in Malta they must contact the Malta Public Registry. If the Civil Union is to be held in Gozo, the couple should apply for their civil union banns at the Marriage Registry in Victoria, Gozo.
Three (3) months prior to the civil union date, the partners should make a request for the publication of banns at the Marriage Registry Section. Partners are requested to contact a Marriage Registry Officer by clicking on the following link https://pubregbooking.identita.gov.mt or by sending an email to pubreg.marriage.identita@gov.mt at least three (3) months before their marriage date. The email must contain a telephone number where the couple may be contacted.
A civil union may take place in the Marriage Registry Marriage Room, or at any other public place that has been approved beforehand by the Marriage Registrar.
- The place where the civil union will be held;
- The date of civil union;
- The surname that the partners after the civil union and the family name they will be adopting
The partners should provide:
- Birth certificates (in case of applicants whose birth is not registered at the Malta Public Registry) apostilled or legalised as necessary (unless these are coming from the European Union);
- Identification documents and copies thereof;
- A photocopy of the identification documents of the witnesses;
- Other documents as required.
