Civil Status Section is responsible for the issuance of true copies of Acts of Birth, Marriage, Civil Union, and Death registered in Malta. It is also responsible for the issuance of Free Status Certificates and multilingual standard forms to public documents for birth, marriage, civil union, free status, and death certificates. Under EU Regulation 2016/1191 of the European Parliament and the Council, such documents no longer need an apostille authentication or legalization and are now accepted by public authorities of another Member State.

Online: All certificates can be ordered online through the website www.certifikati.identita.gov.mt. These are sent by way of post. The Ċertifikati site provides all relevant information to obtain an existing Public Registry civil status certificate, including Birth, Free Status, Marriage, Civil Union, Cohabitation, Death and multilingual translation aids for certificates to be presented to a public authority in another EU member state.

A certificate ordered online may be sent by post worldwide or collected from the offices of the Public Registry, Marsa or the Gozo Public Registry, Victoria. The Civil Status Section processes all certificates ordered within six (6) working days from date of submission.

Purchased from the Malta Public Registry, Marsa and Gozo Public Registry, Victoria, Gozo offices: All certificates can be physically obtained from the Malta Public Registry, Civil Status and Customer Care Section, Aldo Moro Road, Marsa, Malta or the Gozo Public Registry, George Borg Olivier Street, Victoria, Gozo.
