If the original document was issued by a foreign (non-Maltese) entity, the Expatriates Unit will only accept original or certified true copies of the original, specifically:

 

  • Documents issued by an EU Member State in their original or certified true copy do not need to be apostilled or fully legalised by virtue of EU Regulation 2016/1191 applicable from 16th February 2019;
  • Documents issued by non-EU countries in their original or certified true copy must be either apostilled or fully legalised. They are also accepted if accompanied by a forensic consultation certificate.
