Expatriates Unit
Overview
EU nationals who wish to reside in Malta for more than three (3) months, and are exempt persons must register their presence in Malta and may do so, provided that they provide certain documents confirming such eligibility.

Eligibility
The applicant must prove that he is either the spouse, who is residing with the Maltese national, or the child (under the age of twenty-one (21)) of a Maltese national.
How to apply
Applicants may apply through the Expatriates Unit Portal.
Documents required
Spouse of a Maltese national:
- A copy of the applicant’s valid passport (Bio page only);
- A copy of the bio page of the Maltese national’s passport;
- Copy of the Maltese national’s ID card;
- A copy of the spouse’s residence document if applicable;
- A copy of the Divorce Certificate if the spouse had a previous marriage;
- Birth certificate of the spouse apostilled if not issued in an EU country;
- A copy of the Marriage Certificate (registered in Malta);
- Application Form E;
- GDPR Form.
Child of a Maltese Citizen under the age of 21:
- A copy of the bio page of the Maltese national’s passport;
- A copy of the Maltese national’s ID card;
- A copy of the foreign parent and child’s residence document if applicable;
- A copy of the Birth Certificate of the child and apostilled in case it is not issued from an EU country;
- Proof of custody;
- Application Form E;
- GDPR Form.
Widow of a Maltese Citizen:
- A copy of the Marriage Certificate registered in Malta;
- A copy of the Death Certificate of the Maltese citizen;
- Application Form E;
- GDPR Form.
In the case of renewal, the EU national will have to provide the following documents:
Spouse of a Maltese national
- Original and copy of the Bio page of the applicant’s valid passport;
- A copy of the Maltese national’s ID card;
- Original and copy of the applicant’s previous residence card;
- Freedom of Movement/Exempt Person Status letter issued by Identità;
- Application Form E;
- GDPR Form.
Children of the Maltese national
- A copy of the Bio page of the applicant’s valid passport and the Maltese national’s passport;
- A copy of the Maltese national’s ID card;
- A copy of the applicant’s previous residence card;
- Proof of custody;
- Application Form E;
- GDPR Form.
Note: Any documents provided in another language must be officially translated to English or Maltese.
Timeline
The entire process takes approximately 30 working days.
