Introduction of the EU Entry-Exit System (EES)
The European Union is introducing the Entry-Exit System (EES) as one of the measures undertaken to achieve the objectives of the European Agenda on Security and the European Agenda on Migration to achieve higher security levels across the Union, in particular regarding border management and the prevention of cross-border crime and terrorism.
The EES is an automated system which will register travellers from third-countries; both visa holders and visa-exempt travellers; each time they cross the EU's external borders. EES will record personal details, biometric data (facial images and fingerprints), the date and place of entry and exit, as well as refusals of entry. All information will be captured and stored in full respect of fundamental rights and data protection.
The EES system will replace manual passport stamping, aiming to streamline border crossings, enhance security, prevent irregular migration, and help identify over-stayers and cases of identity fraud. Through such automated border control checks and self-service systems, travellers will experience faster and more convenient border control processes.
